In these times we need cooperation, solidarity and empathy more than ever

We are going through extraordinary times. The outbreak of coronavirus has put virtually everything else on hold and we need to respond.

USA should think very carefully about its next leader

It seems almost inevitable that Joe Biden will secure the Democratic nomination and face the incumbent, Donald Trump, in the presidential election in November.

We need to make trains a viable alternative to flying

It is beyond doubt at all that we are faced with a climate emergency. In order to respond effectively, we need concrete measures, fast. Among other types, pollution caused by air travel is considerable and we have to think about viable alternatives.

One such alternative is a train network, possibly subsidised by governments. It could be either a network of sleeper trains or something more comprehensive, depending on the means available and feasibility. There are already useful governmental initiatives in Germany and Sweden, which are most welcome. There are also Europe-wide political initiatives, so far unfortunately without a wider impact.

It goes without saying that such initiatives should become truly global, the sooner the better.

We believe that this is a welcome step forward in probably the biggest long-term crisis that we are facing. It is a matter which must be considered urgently.

EU should abolish national veto and introduce alternatives

It is clear that this topic requires far more research and debate, but every suggestion should be welcome.

At present, national veto in the EU makes the whole system, in some areas at least, slow and inefficient. Examples range from tax policy to foreign affairs and others.

Let us unite against extremists!

It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this week’s European elections. They are likely to be “the most consequential parliamentary vote in EU’s history” (ECFR).
